Before visiting the island of Bali, Rsi Markandeya first visited the island of Java. The name of Ubud comes from the word “Ubad” (Balinese language) which means medicine. Ubud Royal Palace History
During the time of Majapahit Kingdom collapsed which is in the 15th century, there was a massive migration from Javanese nobles from Java to Bali island. Then the Javanese noble creates the Gelgel Kingdom in Klungkung district, a small district located in the southeastern part of Bali island.
In the 17th century, Gelgel kingdom spread the power and regional expansion to other places in Bali and created small royal palace, one of them is Sukawati royal palace.
The Gelgel Kingdom sent their prince to the village area of Sukawati. To build a royal palace with incredible architectural beauty to be intended for power in the Gianyar region. During the Sukawati royal palace construction, many Balinese artists sent to the Sukawati area, to assist the castle construction. After the building of the castle in Sukawati completed, many of the artists chose to stay in Sukawati. Therefore, until now, Sukawati area became the center of beautiful art in Bali. Such as dance, painting, sculpture, Balinese art music.
Puri Saren Agung & Sukawati Kingdom
After successfully building the Sukawati Palace at the end of the 17th century, the King of Sukawati took action to stabilize the Ubud region. At that time, Ubud was facing continuous conflict between two cousins competing for power. Specifically, one controlled the Padang Tegal area, while the other ruled the northern area near what is now known as Ubud Park.
To resolve this situation, the King sent his warriors under the leadership of his two brothers. Tjokorde Ngurah Tabanan was assigned to the Peliatan area of Ubud, while Tjokorde Tangkeban was sent to Sambahan. Soon after, both brothers established their own palaces in these areas in order to strengthen security and assert political control.
After founding his kingdom in Peliatan, Tjokorde Ngurah Tabanan worked together with the King of Mengwi to increase the population of Ubud. As a result, more people settled in the region. Consequently, the growing population stimulated economic activity, and Ubud gradually developed into a more stable and prosperous area.
Puri Saren Agung & Dutch Colonial
In the 19th century, the Dutch colonial government began expanding its influence on the island of Bali. As their presence increased, several Balinese kingdoms grew uneasy. For example, the Kingdom of Mengwi opposed Dutch interference in its territory. However, through political strategy and alliances, the Dutch managed to provoke Mengwi’s old rivals and encourage them to unite against the kingdom.
As a result, Mengwi faced attacks from multiple enemies at once. Consequently, the kingdom became weakened and exhausted, which eventually led to the division of its territory among rival royal alliances.
Meanwhile, the Dutch government continued to intervene more directly in Balinese political affairs. They launched military campaigns against major kingdoms, including Badung, Buleleng, and Klungkung. These confrontations ultimately led to a series of tragic mass battles known as the Puputan, in which Balinese rulers and their followers chose ritual self-sacrifice rather than surrender.
In the early 20th century, under the leadership of Tjokorde Gede Raka Sukawati, Ubud became part of the Sukawati royal lineage. Over time, Ubud developed its own administrative identity. Finally, in 1981, Ubud was officially designated as a sub-district of Gianyar Regency, incorporating the areas of Tegallalang, Peliatan, Mas, and Kedewatan villages.
Ubud Tourism History
In the early 1930s, many foreign tourists began traveling to Bali, and most of them chose to visit Ubud. At that time, Ubud offered something unique compared to other regions. One key reason was the language ability of Tjokorde Gede Agung Sukawati, who ruled Ubud and was fluent in English and Dutch. Because of this, he was able to communicate directly with international visitors and build strong relationships with them.
In addition, the Ubud king had strong business knowledge and understood the potential of tourism. Therefore, he supported the development of guest houses to accommodate foreign visitors. Meanwhile, his brother, Tjokorde Gede Raka Sukawati, also played an important role in promoting Ubud as a cultural destination.
A major turning point came when King Sukawati invited the German painter Walter Spies to live in Ubud. Soon after, Walter Spies influenced other foreign artists to settle in the area. Through international art exhibitions, his paintings—depicting daily life and landscapes in Ubud—introduced the village to the global art scene. As a result, Ubud quickly gained worldwide recognition.
Furthermore, Tjokorde Gede Agung, Walter Spies, and the Dutch artist Rudolf Bonnet established an artists’ association called Pita Maha, with support from local Balinese artists. The purpose of this association was not only to unite artists, but also to maintain artistic standards and teach painting to young people in Ubud.
Because of these combined efforts, Ubud gradually developed into the artistic and cultural heart of Bali. Today, it remains the island’s center for art and museums, including the ARMA Museum and the Museum Puri Lukisan, which preserve and showcase both traditional and modern Balinese artworks.
