Ubud Painting

Ubud painting is heavily influenced by Kamasan-style painting, which was one of the first canvases that developed in Bali. The influence of this painting is very widespread in Bali, especially on the walls of shrine buildings. In contrast to the Batuan style of painting, which is not so widespread, this may be because it requires more skill and sharper concentration, so it takes far more time to complete a small painting. However, it is slightly different in that the Batuan painting style developed in Ubud, which is about 10 kilometers from the village of Batuan.

Initially, the Ubud style was similar to Batuan, mostly based on the theme of belief or religion by taking the objects of the Ramayana, Mahabharata stories, and Hindu ritual trinkets. In terms of coloring materials, it is also the same based on black and white blending. Not knowing more than one dimension, but very detailed, it looks like the leaves of the trees that were calculated by the painter; there is not a single point that escapes 100% painter completion. However, the arrival of Dutch painters in Ubud such as Walter Spies (1926) and Rodof Bonnet (1928) changed the face of Ubud painting by introducing three-dimensional techniques.

kamasan painting style bali

Kamasan Painting style

The classic Balinese painting style in Kamasan painting is very easy to recognize. The basic color is a light brown taken from limestone “Batu gamping”, which is dyed in water.

Black on each incised line; in ancient times, jelaga was used. As for other colors, painters use watercolors to make the painting more lively.

The origins of the traditional Kamasan-style wayang painting are a continuation of the tradition of painting wong-wongan (man and nature) in prehistoric times until the arrival of Hinduism in Bali. Aspects related to the existence of Wayang Kamasan painting include philosophical, spiritual, technical, economic, social, and cultural aspects.

Wayang Kamasan painting is not just a work to explore beauty; the main thing is that a work functions as a ritual object as a medium to achieve certain goals, such as showing good and bad life. The division of fields in Kamasan wayang painting also refers to Hindu teachings about the Tri Loka, namely the bottom, middle, and top. The more sacred the world or space, the more sacred it is considered.

The theme of the painting depicts wayang characters, such as those in the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Sutasoma, Panji, Lelintangan, and others.
According to the impression of international collectors, the Kamasan style paintings are considered to be very refined and sophisticated, clean, not fussed over unimportant details, and the message of the story is very clear.

Jose Miguel Covarrubias

He paints portraits of Balinese women and groups of women who are active in rivers, markets, and rice fields. He shows the culture of Balinese women, who do not wear tops to cover their breasts. The traditional women he painted he documented in his book entitled “Island of Bali”. He also painted many Legong dances, which were also danced by women.

Don Antonio Blanco

Don Antonio Blanco went to Bali in 1952. The painter, born in Manila, Philippines, married a female dancer from Bali named Ni Ronji. The characters in his paintings are sometimes very explicit, showing the bodies of Balinese women. She depicts the everlasting feminine side through an expressive and dreamy romantic painting style. Apart from that, he also paints Bali from the perspective of landscape, environment, love, and pervasive art. He spent his life in Bali and has a museum called Blanco Musium.

Adrien Jean Le Mayeur

His paintings are influenced by the Balinese way of life, Balinese Hindu culture, rituals and religious sites in Bali, and local dances. He admired the light, color, and natural beauty around the Island of the Gods. Through naturalist paintings depicted with acrylic paints.

Arie Wilhelmus Smit

Smit visited Bali in 1956 with the Dutch artist Auke Sonnega. He often invites young talents to paint in his studio. People define his painting style as a ‘young artist’ style. In 1994, he opened the Neka Art Museum, which displays his work and that of other contemporary Balinese artists. His paintings have been exhibited in Jakarta, Singapore, Honolulu, and Tokyo. In 2016, a comprehensive monograph appeared with the title “A Painter’s Life in The Tropics”. Apart from the six names of painters above, there are many other foreign artists who spend most of their time in Bali creating works. Starting from there, the name Bali began to stick out when art became one of the tools to attract people to go to the Island of the Gods.
