The History of Pura Tirta Empul Temple
Tirta Empul Temple was created by the god Indra during the war against Mayanadenawa from Bedahulu Kingdom, a great king with the magic power to disappear. A greedy king destroys many kingdoms around him, and a strong king forbids the people from worshiping the gods. The resultant kingdom collapsed shortly after the porbiden. Hearing the greed of the king Maya Denawa, the god Indra came to earth to save the world from the destruction caused by the king Maya Denawa. For that reason, Bhatara Indra fought him.
By the time of the war, Mayanadenawa and his troops were desperate, so they walked with their paws bent, and from there, the area where the battle took place was called ”Tampak Miring” and has now become the village of Tampaksiring.
In desperation, Mayanadenawa created a poison pool (Yeh Cetik) to destroy Bhatara Indra’s army. His tactics worked well, and because of the exhaustion of the constant war, many of Bhatara Indra’s troops finally drank Yeh Cetik. Not a few Bhatara Indra troops were poisoned by drinking the poison water. Out of that cunning tactic, the strength of Bhatara Indra’s army decreased considerably. To save the army, Bhatara Indra then threw an umbul-umbul weapon to the ground.
Immediately, there appeared a fountain of water flowing up from the god’s Indra weapons. After drinking the spring, Bhatara Indra’s army can come back alive. Centuries later, the fountain was arranged and completed as a water park by King Indrajaya Sigha Warmadewa in 882 C.E. and was named “Tirta Ri Air Hampul” or “Tirta Empul,” which means Pathirtaan that envelopes.
